I’m not a fashion person, but recently there is a wave of young fashion designers that have caught my attention and among them, there is one who stands out.
What makes Joseph Altuzarra stands out?
OK, maybe initially it’s his looks that caught my eyes. I was desperately hoping that he isn’t gay, although I doubt it would affect me in any way. Nevertheless while researching for his gender preference (Yes, I am that idle), I found out more about him and developed likings for his design and personality.
Joseph Altuzarra is born and raised in Paris. After high school, he moved to the United States to study art history at Swarthmore College and upon graduation, he entered the fashion industry as an intern for Marc Jacobs. From there he added Proenza Schouler and Givenchy to his portfolio before launching his eponymous line Altuzarra in 2007 in New York. I find it rather interesting that a Parisian would choose to start his line in New York instead of Paris, the fashion capital of the world. Anyhow, his first show was a success and he is soon known for his signature design of body-conscious clothing that brings out a woman’s figure in a sassy way.
Despite having no formal education in design, Joseph Altuzarra is now standing in the fashion frontline with the likes of Alexandra Wang, Prabal Gurung, Jason Wu, etc. I think it’s inspiring that someone who does not have formal training in fashion can be just as successful as someone who has. It shows that if you think you’ve got what it takes, just take chances and try it out. You might find yourself becoming the next Joseph Altuzarra in whatever industry you’re aiming for!
